#rgdcanada #rgddt #designthinkerstoronto #graphicdesign #design As an attendee, I saw how much work went into making it run smoothly…2,000+ attended! Bravo! Kudos to the organizers of Design Thinkers 2023. Paul Trani from Adobe showcased how they're integrating AI into design software, and how designers might use it to rethink our creative processes. □ The multidimensional designer: Designers must adapt to seismic technological changes by becoming "multidimensional." Specialization, while valuable, may not guarantee long-term success. □□ Listening can be an act of radical inclusion: Farai Madzima, UX Manager at Shopify, shared some common thoughts we probably had at some point: “I could hear you, but I was just waiting for you to finish so I could make my point.” “I pretend to listen I even nodded my head, but I was actually sending a Slack message.” We can all improve the way we listen, and do it actively (tying us back to relationships being a key driver to success, as always). Whenever I find artistry behind the curtain of design and business constraints, my heart swells with joy. □ Design needs artistry: Forest Young from Rivian walked us through a journey into what his design process looks like from the inside out, starting with the most humble of shapes - the square pixel - and from there, moving into complex ideas and visuals expressed in unexpected ways. ✨ Career transformation: Stefan Sagmeister's journey from CD packaging design to paintings informed by data and history illustrated the possibility of aligning our careers with our ever-evolving selves just going where life - and our curiosity - takes us. □ Our enduring need for connection: Despite advances in AI, our need for creative expression, communication, and community remains constant. Paula Scher presented some extensive client work, demonstrating the results of these connections. □□ Prioritize relationships: It takes time and practice, but learning how to build solid, transparent relationships is foundational. Noel Cottrell from Murder Hornet presented "Creative Violence Solves Everything," a captivating take on harnessing the role of discomfort, leading to impact and better results. However, embracing courage and radically creative thinking can lead to groundbreaking outcomes. This can be daunting in various work settings, from being the sole in-house designer to working in large teams with hierarchies and numerous stakeholders. □ Rewrite the status quo: Instead of simply challenging the status quo, designers have the power to rewrite it. The conference was a superb reminder of how much potential design has in the 21st century. Over the holiday break here in the U.S., I had a chance to reflect on my visit to Toronto, to attend the RGD Design Thinkers 2023 conference with my colleague Cynthia Morales.
